| Christian Names: Garry Vass, Tom Vass, Wallace, and Nicholas |
|---|
| We all know that Tom Vass's are the highest occurrence of a Christian name. Tom ranks 1st with a staggering 12! There are 7 Garry Vass's on the internet, and two Garry J. Vass's. Three are in the UK, 1 is in Canada, and 2 are in the USA. It is the most frequent non-Scottish Christian name that we know of next to Tom/Thomas. At least two are programmers, and another is active in Google, but all can be found with a Google search. We don't have their contact details. If you know of another non-Scottish Christian name with a higher frequency, we would love to hear about it! Believe it or not, we have 5 Wallace's and a mind numbing 2 Nicholas Vass's! |
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What does "Vass" mean? |
The etymology of "Vass" is uncertain. There are several theories...
|
| Do I have a rich relative somewhere? | No. |
| Is the Vass family entitled to wear a Scottish tartan? | Yes. We may wear both the Munro and ancient Ross tartans without challenge. |
| Was anyone in the Vass family ever famous? | No. We are generally solid-citizen, family-oriented, salt-of-the-earth, peace-loving people who have gone about our business in caring for our immediate family. For better or worse, it can be said that fame and fortune have eluded the Vass family. Records indicate that the Vass family has produced professors, artists, scholars, dancers, common thieves, writers, designers, pilots, analysts, doctors, taxi-drivers, soldiers-of-fortune, lawyers, barristers, moonshine runners, navigators, financial advisors, literary critics, explorers, respected journalists, drug dealers, pastors, priests, and street beggars. We are a diverse lot! |
| OK, was anyone in the Vass family ever prominent in some way? |
Yes. There's a government minister in Hungary, also an olympic coach. Four Vass's were decorated by Queen Victoria for services during the Mutiny. One Vass died whilst trying to scale the Eiger. A fair number of Vass's, including two black Vass's served with distinction in the American Civil War. Joan Vass established a chain of clothing stores in the US. Several black Vass's were prominent in the American Civil Rights Movement. There's lots of links below about these and other prominent members of the Vass Family! NOTE: Veronique Vass has provided a link between the Scottish-Hungarian branches of the family and the US Civil War. To read this fascinating article, click here! |
| Do we have a claim to any place names? | Yes. There is the town of Vass, North Carolina (USA); There are records of a Fort Vass in Blacksburg, Virginia (USA); and Vass Branch Road in West Virginia (USA). Details about these are posted here on the site! |
| Is there a Hungarian (Central European) connection? |
Historians tell us that following a revolt in a province on the Danube (in what is now modern-day Hungary), the Romans shipped a large number of captives and hostages to Britain to work on projects related to Hadrian's wall (the wall itself was built by Roman legionaires), and it is possible that some of the Vass bloodstock arrived as prisoners of war from Central Europe. There are, however, no definitive records supporting this notion. NOTE: Imre Vass has provided a rebuttal to the "Hadrian's Wall - Vass family" connection. To read Imre's comments, click here. |
| How many Vass family are out there? | There are approximately 8,500 carrying the name. The majority are in the U. S. and Canada, this is followed closely by Scotland, England, Australia, and New Zealand. In terms of ethnic reference, we are mainly Caucasian, but we note with pride that the Vass Family also includes Afro-Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic, and Arabic peoples. We embrace all of them. If you are from one of these groups, we would love to hear from you! |
| How can I find out if I have any relatives out there? | The links on this page should get you started. Then go to the guest book, you will find some entries inviting further email on the topic of the Vass Family. If you learn something interesting, please let us know! |
| Are there ever Vass family gatherings on a mass scale? | No. Of course, each branch of the Vass family observes its own tradition and gatherings with immediate family are a part of that tradition. Mass gatherings of the Vass family across global Vass family branches, however, is not our way. |
| Who are you? | I am a part of the first generation American branch, believed to be by way of Dundee, Quebec, in turn believed to be by way of Dundee, Scotland. |

Research Summary The brief was to search the index of the Register of Sasines for Inverness for anyone by the name of VASS owning land prior to 1784. Also to check for anyone by the name of VASS in the 1821 or 1831 census for Moy and Dalarossie Parish. The result of the research was that We did find entries for the name in both these sources. Research Details First of all, it is worth pointing out that the name VASS has many different spellings in Scotland. Blacks "Surnames of Scotland" has VAUS, VAUSS, WAUS and WAUSS as variations. We have also seen it as VOSS. Black also states that "The name was also long and honourably connected with Inverness, appearing there for the first time in 1440". Register of Sasines for Inverness. The Scottish Record Society has produced indexes to the Register of Sasines for Inverness for 1606-1660 (excluding 1609-1616) and also for 1721 to 1780. The index for 1721 to 1780 has the following entry:- VAUS (VAUSE, VAUSS) Jean, spouse of Alexander Ross, gardener, Ankerville, formerly in Cromarty and in Suddie, IX.541; X.134; XII.502. The index for 1606-1660 has the following:- VAUS (WAUSS) of Lochslin (Lochslyne, Loslin), John, SR.269, 291, 292, 336, 362 ---- ---- son of John V. thereof, SR.362 of Meikill Allane, David, SR.88,89 David, so of John V. of Lochslin, SR.269,291,292,336 Elizabeth, relict of Alexander Denune of Pittogartie, IV.68, 106; VII.24,37 We also checked the later Index to Abridgements of the Register of Sasines for Inverness for 1781-1820, but there were no entries for the name VASS (or any variants). 1821 and 1831 Census Within the Old Parochial Register for Moy and Dalrossie (reference 105/2) are the names of inhabitants of the parish in 1821 and 1831. The names were recorded as part of the census taken in those years. There are no details of relationships or ages, just names and addresses. For 1821, the name VASS only appears at the address of "Higher Inverbrough" and the occupants were:- David VASS, Thomas VASS, Alexander VASS, Anne VASS, Elizabeth VASS There was no-one by the name of VASS in the 1831 census. |

There are so many derivations of Lachlan. My GG Grandfather, James Vass was born in Forres, (Moray) Scotland in 1770. On his birth certificate his father is listed as "Lauchlan" which I am told could have been just the way a visiting minister heard it and transcribed it. From the old Gaelic "lough-lann" (loch habitation) to "Lachunn", to "Lachlan"of which there are four (two living) in my section of the family. To date I am not aware of any "Lacklands" in my tree back to My GGG Grandfather. ~~ Of interest, I am told that Lachlan Vass, a highlander, is exactly named by James Boswell in his classic "Journal of a Journey to the Hebrides" published in 1785. Boswell praises him for helping them (He and Samuel Johnson) escape a raging snow storm. I am in touch with the person who will tell me the Chapter and page of this revelation which I will send immediately to Garry. Eventually I may travel some 70 miles to the nearest large library to research that passage. Perhaps you, Garry or Tom might be closer to Boswell's renowned masterpiece then I will be for a while. ~~ One of my frequent corespondents in Scotland is a professional genealogist who is on his way by invitation this summer to a conference in Salt Lake City, UT, home of the great Mormon directory. As he would say in signing off ~~ Orrabest ~ Lachlan. |
| Commentary by Imre Vass on the "Hadrian's Wall - Vass family" connection |
|---|
|
I'm Hungarian. I'm really happy that I found your page!!! Let me gently remark, that the theory about the possible Hungarian hostages taken from Pannonia province 'to work on projects on Hadrian's wall', seems a bit anachronistic. Here are some facts concerning this issue: The Romans gave up building Hadrian's wall in around 380. The Roman Empire collapsed in 476. The first Hungarian tribes, after centuries of wandering westward from Asia, arrived in the Carpathian Basin - the western part of it was the formerly called Pannonia - in the early 890's. So those hostages can defenetely not have been Hungarians. Otherwise I accept the idea that western Vasses are somehow related to Hungarian Vasses. Love to all Vasses, (Imre Vass, correspondence dated 12 July 2002) |
